Devdar Lokta Rope Incense Bundle

The deodar. Cedrus deodara - the Himalayan cedar or Devdar - is one of the four true cedars (genus Cedrus) and the dominant evergreen across the Himalayan belt from Afghanistan and Kashmir through Nepal and into northwestern India. The heartwood is highly resinous, naturally rot-resistant, and aromatic in a way that few other woods match. The Sanskrit-derived name devadāru, "wood of the gods" in literal etymology, reflects the tree's prominence in regional cultural geography across the Himalayan landscape.

The rope. The workshop grinds the deodar heartwood finely and wraps it in handmade Lokta paper, twisting the paper along its length to form a thin twine-like rope. Lokta paper is made from the inner bark of the Daphne papyracea shrub native to the Himalayan foothills; the paper has been produced in the Kathmandu Valley for over a thousand years and is the traditional carrier material for Nepali rope incense.

Character on the burn. Clean, woody, and composed. Opens dry and resinous with the deodar heartwood note immediate. The middle minutes carry the warm balsam register characteristic of the cedar family. The close is dry-sweet with the wood-grain character holding. Soft forest-like throughout - less smoky than juniper, less floral than sandalwood, more upright in register than the gentler botanical blends.

1. Take a single rope from the bundle.
2. Hold one end to a flame for 8–12 seconds until it catches.
3. Blow out the flame - the rope smoulders along its length.
4. Place the lit end on a flat heat-safe burner surface; the rope burns horizontally.
5. The rope burns slowly from the lit end inward.
6. Allow the burner and remaining ash to cool fully before disposal.

Burn in a well-ventilated room. The horizontal burn pattern means the rope needs a flat heat-safe surface rather than a vertical holder. Store the bundle in a cool, dry place.

The deodar should not be confused with American cedars such as Juniperus virginiana ("eastern red cedar") or Cedrela odorata (the Mexican Burseraceae sometimes sold as cedar but botanically unrelated to the Cedrus genus). These are different trees in different families with different aromatic chemistry. The other three true cedars are C. atlantica (Atlas mountains), C. libani (eastern Mediterranean), and C. brevifolia (Cyprus); each shares the genus and approximate aromatic character with the Himalayan deodar but carries its own terroir signature. The rope format suits the deodar character particularly well - the slower burn allows the wood-grain register to develop more fully than the punctual stick burn does.
