Kucho Incense Broom

The kuchu (also transliterated kucho) is a small ceremonial-tradition broom from the Himalayan craft region - a bundle of fine natural plant fibres bound by hand at one end into a short shaft, the other end loose and feathered into a soft brush surface. The specific fibre varies by maker; common materials are broom-grass (Thysanolaena maxima, the same plant used in the larger household sweeping brooms across South Asia) and various other long-stem grasses native to the Himalayan foothills. The binding is typically natural twine or thin cord.

The broom is sized for the hand - typically 20–25 cm in total length, with the brush end forming the larger portion. Lightweight, flexible at the brush end, with the bound shaft providing a firm grip. The form is functional rather than ornamental.

The kuchu's specific use is for spreading and directing incense smoke after a stick or resin burner has been lit. The broom is held at the shaft and used to fan or sweep the smoke across the room, into corners, or toward a specific person or area. The soft brush end moves the smoke without disturbing the burning incense itself.

1. Light the incense source (stick, cone, or resin on charcoal) and allow it to establish a steady smoke.
2. Hold the kuchu by the bound shaft, brush end forward.
3. Use small fanning or sweeping motions to move the smoke across the room - toward corners, doorways, or whatever direction is desired.
4. For directing smoke around an object or area, sweep the brush end through the smoke and toward the target without touching the burning incense.
5. Store hanging or flat after use; the brush end retains its shape best if not crushed under weight.

The brush fibres are natural and lightly absorbent - over time they pick up trace aromatic residue from repeated use, which is part of the broom's character. Avoid placing the brush end directly in flame or hot ash. Light dust can be removed by shaking; do not wash.
