Na Swa Lokta Rope Incense Bundle

Spikenard. Nardostachys jatamansi - known in English as spikenard, in Hindi as jatamansi, and in classical Greek and Latin sources simply as "nard" - is one of the most historically traded aromatic materials of the ancient Mediterranean and South Asian world. The plant grows at altitudes between 3,000 and 5,000 metres in the Himalayan range from Afghanistan and Nepal through to the Indian state of Uttarakhand; the rhizomes (underground stems) are the source of the aromatic. References to nard appear in the writings of Theophrastus, Dioscorides, and Pliny; the trade in spikenard from the Himalayas to the Mediterranean is one of the oldest documented long-distance aromatic trades, running for at least two thousand years.

The rope. The Kathmandu workshop grinds the dried rhizomes and wraps the powder in handmade Lokta paper, twisting the paper along its length to form a thin twine-like rope. The high cost and scarcity of true spikenard means the workshop's blend may include other Himalayan botanicals as the structural carrier, with the spikenard providing the distinctive character note.

Character on the burn. Deep, earthy, musky-herbal. The opening minutes carry the rhizome's characteristic woody-earth register; the middle is the longest-lasting and most identifiable spikenard signature - a slightly musky, slightly camphorous, deeply herbal register that has no close analogue in the wider aromatic range. The close carries the herbal note as a long tail. Substantially deeper and more distinctive than the floral, woody, or resin-led ropes in the cluster.

1. Take a single rope from the bundle.
2. Hold one end to a flame for 8–12 seconds until it catches.
3. Blow out the flame - the rope smoulders along its length.
4. Place the lit end on a flat heat-safe burner surface; the rope burns horizontally.
5. The rope burns slowly from the lit end inward.
6. Allow the burner and remaining ash to cool fully before disposal.

Burn in a well-ventilated room. Spikenard's depth and persistence mean a single rope suits a mid-sized room; the room-presence holds for some time after the rope has finished burning. Store the bundle in a cool, dry place.

Spikenard occupies a particular place in the history of aromatic trade. The Himalayan rhizome was one of the most expensive materials traded across the ancient Mediterranean and Near Eastern world - the writings of Theophrastus, Dioscorides, and Pliny all reference its sources, its preparation, and its scarcity. The high altitude at which the plant grows (3,000–5,000 metres) and the slow rate at which it produces its aromatic rhizome made it one of the most labour-intensive aromatic materials to harvest in the ancient world; it remains so today, which is why true spikenard products are uncommon outside specialist aromatic ranges. The Na Swa rope is the rare household-scale presentation of a material that has historically been more often encountered as an essential oil or as a component in expensive perfumery compositions.
