Natural Abalone Shell (5-6 inches)

Abalone shells belong to the Haliotis genus - marine mollusks distributed across cold and temperate coastal waters worldwide. The Mexican abalone fishery centres on the Pacific waters of Baja California Sur, where several Haliotis species are commercially harvested. The shell's distinctive feature is its inner surface: lined with nacre, the same iridescent mineral-protein composite that forms pearls. The mineral fraction is calcium carbonate; the iridescence comes from how light refracts through stacked microscopic crystal layers laid down by the mollusk slowly across years of growth. The oceanic colour palette of blues, greens, and purples reflects the specific chemistry of the waters the mollusk inhabited during those years.

1. Place the shell on a heat-safe surface with the iridescent interior facing up.
2. The shell catches ash and embers from burning bundles or palo santo sticks.
3. Wipe the interior with a soft, dry cloth after use to remove ash and residue.
4. Avoid contact with harsh chemicals - the shell's iridescence depends on its untreated surface.
5. Store in a dry, safe place to prevent chipping.

Important: do not burn resin or charcoal in the shell. Charcoal discs reach temperatures (600–900°C) far above what the shell can safely withstand - calcium carbonate begins decomposing around 825°C, and the nacre layer is damaged well below that. The shell is designed for bundles, sticks, and other smouldering materials only.

The nacre that lines abalone shells is the same biological material that forms pearls. A pearl is nacre layered around an irritant inside the mollusk; an abalone shell is nacre layered along the inside of the protective housing. The pearl traditions of the Arabian Gulf and the iridescent abalone shells of the Pacific Mexico fishery are made of the same compound - calcium carbonate platelets in a protein matrix - deposited in different geometries by different mollusk species over years of slow accumulation. The same material, very different forms.
