Golden Rutile Crystal Bracelet

The golden threads are rutile - titanium dioxide, TiO₂ - grown as fine needles and then enclosed by clear quartz that crystallised around them. The host is the same SiO₂ as the rest of the quartz family, Mohs 7; the needles are the reason to want it.

Because the needles grew freely before the quartz sealed them, each bead holds a different golden scatter - dense in one, a few bright strands in another. Light runs along the metallic needles, so the gold catches and releases as the wrist turns.

The needles range from pale straw to deep copper-gold; finer material shows them sharp and bright against water-clear quartz.
