Deep ultramarine scattered with gold - lapis lazuli, the blue of the royal tombs of Ur, its pyrite read by the ancient world as stars against a night sky. A rock, not a single mineral; cool and smooth in the palm, no two stones alike.

Lapis lazuli - deep ultramarine scattered with gold, the blue of the royal tombs of Ur, its pyrite read by the ancient world as stars against a night sky. From Afghanistan, a palm stone.

It is a rock, not a single mineral - lazurite for the deep blue, calcite for the white veining, pyrite for the brass-gold flecks. An evenly perfect blue with no markings is often dyed; the variation here is the genuine stone.

Mined at a single mountain, Sar-i-Sang in the Badakhshan highlands of Afghanistan, for thousands of years, and ground from the medieval period into ultramarine, the costliest pigment in European painting. Softer and porous at Mohs 5–5.5 - dry cloth only, keep from water.

Interior of the Maison Éthérique store: shelves of minerals along the walls and visitors at a long wooden table.

A contemporary house of ancient materials

Maison Éthérique brings together incense, aromatic resins, botanical bundles, crystals and the objects used with them. From our house in Dubai, we explore their aromas, stories and traditions - a collection for personal rituals, familiar favourites and gifts with meaning.

For the meaning it holds

A familiar aroma can become part of a daily ritual. A stone can be kept as a symbol of protection; a botanical chosen for a practice of purification. Across the collection, scent, beauty and personal meaning offer different reasons to choose.
