Sodalite - deep navy veined and clouded with white, cool and smooth in the palm, the mineral kin of lapis lazuli: the blue without the gold. From Brazil, shaped into a palm stone.

It is a sodium aluminium silicate carrying chlorine in its lattice, and it gives its name to a mineral group; lazurite, the blue of lapis, is a member of that group, so the two stones are true kin. The white veining is calcite.

Sodalite carries no pyrite, so there are no gold flecks - the choice between it and lapis is navy against ultramarine, cloud against stars. Described in 1811 from Greenland and named for its sodium. Softer than quartz at Mohs 5.5–6 - keep it from soaking.

Interior of the Maison Éthérique store: shelves of minerals along the walls and visitors at a long wooden table.

A contemporary house of ancient materials

Maison Éthérique brings together incense, aromatic resins, botanical bundles, crystals and the objects used with them. From our house in Dubai, we explore their aromas, stories and traditions - a collection for personal rituals, familiar favourites and gifts with meaning.

For the meaning it holds

A familiar aroma can become part of a daily ritual. A stone can be kept as a symbol of protection; a botanical chosen for a practice of purification. Across the collection, scent, beauty and personal meaning offer different reasons to choose.
