Charcoal Tablet Roll for Resin Incense Burning

Self-igniting charcoal tablets. Compressed charcoal discs treated with a small percentage of saltpetre (potassium nitrate) to allow the edge to catch a flame directly without the need for sustained heat from a separate ignition source. Once lit, the tablet glows progressively across its surface as the saltpetre carries the oxidation reaction inward; within thirty to forty-five seconds the edges glow grey-white and the tablet is ready to receive resin or incense.

The tablets burn at temperatures sufficient to vaporise the volatile aromatic compounds in frankincense, copal, myrrh, and other resin tears — typically reaching 600–900°C across the burning surface. This is the temperature range that releases the resin's full aromatic chemistry; lower temperatures (such as those reached by indirect resin warmers) produce a different, gentler aromatic profile that doesn't carry the same depth as charcoal burning.

1. Hold a charcoal tablet at its edge with tongs (avoid handling with bare fingers - the saltpetre treatment can stain skin).
2. Light an edge of the tablet with a flame; the saltpetre catches and begins burning across the surface.
3. Place the tablet in a heat-safe burner.
4. Wait 30–45 seconds until the edges glow grey-white.
5. Place a small piece of resin (or incense, or palo santo powder) on the warm surface.
6. The tablet burns for approximately 45 minutes to one hour depending on size and ventilation.
7. Allow the spent tablet to cool fully before disposal.

Always use in a heat-safe burner - never directly on bare wood, fabric, or other heat-sensitive surfaces. Burn in a ventilated room. Store the unused tablets in their original packaging or a sealed container to prevent the saltpetre from absorbing moisture and degrading.
