Dechen Incense Tibetan

The name. Dechen is the Tibetan term bde chen (བདེ་ཆེན་) - bde meaning well-being or contentment, chen meaning great. The compound is often translated as "great bliss." Here it is the workshop's designation for the brightest of the three blends, drawing on the word for its sense of contented quietness rather than as a claim about effect.

The recipe. The Himalayan botanicals are the workshop's confidential base. The sweet resins - drawing from the benzoin and labdanum family that the workshop favours for its softer resinous register - sit in the upper-middle. The light florals add the brighter floral lift. The warming spices, in the cinnamon, clove and cardamom family, add the upper warm-spiced edge. Of the three Tibetan-tradition blends, this is the most aromatically forward.

The workshop and the place. Made in Karnataka, India by makers from the Tibetan craft community established at Bylakuppe, Mundgod, and Hunsur - the same diasporic settlements that produce Padma and Samten. The recipe and rolling technique are carried from Tibetan tradition; the materials and the place are Indian.

The form. Bamboo-less sticks, plant-based binder, handrolled. Same technical method as Padma and Samten.

Character on the burn. Opens warm and softly sweet, with the resinous register first. The middle minutes carry the floral and the warm spice in parallel. The close is a sweet-resinous residue with a faint spiced edge. Brighter and warmer than Padma's quiet floralism and substantially lighter than Samten's earth-and-vetiver depth.

1. Take a stick from the tube.
2. Hold the tip to a flame for 5–10 seconds until it catches.
3. Blow out the flame - the stick smoulders.
4. Place the stick in the included chatoyant quartz holder on a heat-safe surface.
5. The stick burns for approximately 30 minutes.
6. Allow the holder to cool completely before handling.

Burn in a well-ventilated room. The brighter profile suits daytime use - morning rooms, afternoon work, midday spaces. Store the tube cool and dry to preserve the resin and spice character.
