Petite Incense Stick Holder

Two separately carved pieces of soapstone (steatite) that function as a single object. The outer shell is a carved cube or cuboid form with an open top; the inner piece is a smaller perforated cube that sits inside the shell. The stick incense passes through one of the perforations in the inner cube, which holds the stick upright; the base of the outer shell catches the falling ash.

The two-piece construction is the distinguishing detail. Most stick holders are single-piece - a dish with a hole or a sculptural form with an embedded holding point. The two-piece format separates the stick-holding function (the perforated cube) from the ash-collection function (the outer shell base), which means the inner cube can be lifted out and emptied separately, and the design accommodates a wider range of stick diameters through different perforations.

Both pieces are hand-carved from the same soapstone - the natural variation in the stone runs across both pieces. The carving is precise enough that the cube sits cleanly within the shell with the right working clearance.

1. Place the assembled holder (insert cube inside the outer shell) on a heat-safe surface.
2. Insert a stick incense through one of the perforations in the inner cube - the cube holds the stick at the correct angle.
3. Light the tip, blow out the flame, allow to smoulder.
4. The ash falls through the cube perforations and collects in the base of the outer shell.
5. Allow to cool fully before disassembling.
6. To clean: lift the insert cube out, empty the ash from the shell base, wipe both pieces with a soft dry cloth.

Soapstone is soft - handle carefully. The two pieces should be kept together as a pair; the cube is sized specifically for this shell. Avoid water and strong cleaning agents. Soft dry cloth only.
