Bursera bipinnata is one of the principal copal-producing trees of Mexico - part of the wider Burseraceae family that also includes Boswellia (frankincense from Arabia and the Horn of Africa), Commiphora (myrrh from Arabia and East Africa), Protium (Amazonian and Mesoamerican copals), and the same Mexican Bursera genus that produces palo santo's near-cousins. The genus has adapted to a wide range of New World habitats - from the dry tropical forests of Mexico to the lowland coastal plains.

White copal (copal blanco in Spanish) is the lightest grade in the Mexican copal tradition: pale cream to translucent white-yellow tears, brittle when handled, with a sweeter and lighter character than the darker copals. The resin has been burned across Mesoamerica since pre-Columbian times - the Mexica, Maya, and Zapotec peoples all incorporated copal into their aromatic and material traditions, and the Spanish colonial period spread its commercial use across the wider Iberian-Atlantic world.

Character on charcoal. White copal opens lemony and bright - sweeter than frankincense, lighter than myrrh, with a piney resinous note that builds gradually as the tear warms. Around three minutes in, the scent settles into soft balsam with a faint floral edge underneath. Lighter room-presence than the Hojari grades; a brighter aromatic register.

1. Hold a charcoal tablet with tongs and light an edge.
2. Wait until the edges glow grey-white (30–45 seconds).
3. Place a small piece of white copal on the warm tablet.
4. The aroma opens lemony and sweet in the first minutes, then settles into soft balsam.
5. One tear scents a mid-sized room for twenty to thirty minutes - burns slightly faster than frankincense.

Burn on a heat-proof surface in a ventilated room. Allow charcoal to cool fully before disposal. White copal melts and pools slightly on charcoal - easier to handle than the harder frankincense tears, with less char residue at the end of the burn.
